Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Arizona recently donated approximately $11,000 to Diamond Children’s Medical Center. The funds were raised during the fraternity’s “Derby Days” competition, which took place Feb. 22-26 on the UA Mall.
Derby Days included competitions such as an egg walk, obstacle courses, capturing the “Derby flag,” “Sign a Sig,” and a “Derby Darling Skit Night.” In addition, “Fear Factor” challenges included eating beef liver, pig skin, pig ears and hot sauce.
“Derby Days is a vital part of Sigma Chi’s overall goal to represent the University of Arizona and give back to the community,” says Michael Colletti, chairman of Derby Days. “We are looking forward to more successful events like this.”
“We are amazed and delighted with the success of Sigma Chi’s first event,” said Vicki Began, RN, vice president of Women and Children’s Services at University Medical Center. “Their commitment to the children of our community through supporting Diamond Children’s Medical Center is truly inspiring, and we are grateful for their gift.”
Diamond Children’s Medical Center is Arizona’s first pediatric medical center connected to an academic research institution — the Steele Children’s Research Center, housed within the Department of Pediatrics at the UA College of Medicine. Diamond Children’s will open publicly in September 2010.
